WINTER SCHOLAR-ATHLETES FROM AKRON SCHOOLS ANNOUNCED

AKRON, NEW YORK (March 16, 2018) – Akron Central Schools is pleased to recognize eight seniors who have earned Scholar-Athlete All Western New York selection by Section VI of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association. This designation is reserved for seniors with an overall grade point average of 90 or above for six semesters who are starters or important reserves on their respective athletic teams.

Margo Henley is one of only 30 athletes in all of Section VI to win the top scholar-athlete recognition for the second time this year. Margo played basketball and ran cross country as well. Sara Hoefler, also from the girls basketball team, won the top scholar-athlete designation, too. They will be featured with other scholar-athletes from Western New York in an upcoming edition of The Buffalo News and will receive a t-shirt recognizing this distinction, compliments of ADPRO Sports.

Additionally, six other athletes ACS earned Honorable Mention as scholar-athletes in Section VI. They are swimmers Allison Baumler, Andrew Buyea and Bailey Lesniak, and wrestlers Charles Fischer IV, Hunter Oldenski and Morgan Smith.

“These young men and women continue to embody the meaning of the term student-athlete,” said Mr. Joseph Lucenti, High School Principal. “Their excellence on and off the field are a tribute to their dedication and hard work as well as the support they have received from parents, teachers and coaches.  Akron celebrates them and all they do to make us even better.”

Mr. Dimitroff, Akron’s assistant principal and athletic director, also commented on the selection of students for this recognition.

“Once again, our student athletes prove their commitment to excellence in the classroom as well as in their athletic forum,” said Mr. Dimitroff. “These students truly embody what it means to be an Akron Tiger. Congratulations and Go Tigers!”

The winter sports for which Akron Schools participates include basketball, swimming and wrestling. Nominations are submitted to Section VI with the student’s transcript, academic and athletic accomplishments, community service and other school activities.
