The Akron Central School District offers 1/2 day pre-kindergarten programming at two sites: Rattles to Reading and Ms. Jean's Child Care. Presently, Akron serves 52 UPK students. The program runs from September to June, generally on the same calendar as the K-12 program. All students are selected for the Universal Pre-K program by lottery.
Our pre-kindergarten curriculum is well articulated and coordinated so that children in each program meet the same standards. Teachers at the Pre-K sites have worked on the curriculum with Akron teachers and administrators since the program began in 1999 to ensure that the focus is always on students and their needs.
Our learner-centered curriculum builds on English literacy, social and emotional development, and physical skills. Support services to both students and parents offer counseling and linkages to various social agencies. Parent involvement is central to our mission. Parent volunteer opportunities, parent meetings, newsletters, field trips and home visits are just some of the many ways that our pre-kindergarten teachers reach out to involve parents.
