What is Speech-Language Therapy?

Speech-Language Therapy is the treatment for children with a speech or language disorder.

A speech disorder refers to a problem with the production of sounds, whereas a language disorder refers to a difficulty understanding or putting words together to communicate thoughts or ideas.

Language disorders can be either receptive or expressive.

Receptive disorders refer to difficulty understanding or processing language.

Expressive disorders include difficulty putting words together in a sentence, limited vocabulary, or inability to use language in a socially appropriate way.
What do Speech Language Pathologists do?

Evaluate, treat, and help to prevent speech, language, cognitive-communication, voice, fluency and other related disorders

Collaborate with teachers, special educators, other school personnel and parents to develop individual or group programs and support classroom activities.

- Speech Improvement services
- Speech-Occupational Therapy Group
- Central Auditory Processing Therapy
Qualifications for these services include:
- Standardized test results
- Falling within speech-language guidelines
- Informal screening of articulation
- Classroom performance/teacher recommendation
