VIDEO: Inaugural Akron Elementary Bike Bus Builds Community

Students at Akron Elementary School joined together to start their day on the road for the school’s first-ever Bike Bus.

More than 100 students and family members took part in the 1.5-mile ride on May 15, traveling from East Avenue to Townsend Street then down Bloomingdale Avenue to the school, escorted by school staff and members of the Village of Akron Police Department. Physical education teacher Brittany Shukraft, who organized the event, said the bike ride was a perfect way to start the school day. 

“The Bike Bus helps to build a great sense of community and enhance overall physical fitness,” she said. “It was so great to see all the smiling faces on two wheels.” 

Riding in waves with their classmates, students nearing the end of the ride at the school building were met by a row of cheering family and community members. 

“It was incredible to see the whole community come together and do something with families and the students together,” said Principal Carolyn Kos.
