Introducing the Code Blue Busing Plan

A school bus

Dear Families,

The safety and well-being of our students is always our highest priority. As we continue to look for ways to support one another, we are introducing a new pilot initiative called the Code Blue Busing Plan.

In the event of extreme weather conditions, the District may send out a notification indicating that Code Blue Busing is in effect. When Code Blue Busing is implemented, we encourage families to take advantage of additional transportation options which are designed to help students arrive at school safely.

What Code Blue Busing Means:

  • Middle School and High School walkers who have younger siblings in grades K–5 that ride the bus are eligible to board the bus with their siblings.
  • All other students who are designated walkers have the option of riding the bus during Code Blue Busing. Students who plan on riding the bus during Code Blue Busing  should wait at the end of their driveway by 7:40 a.m. A school bus will pick them up and transport them to school.

As we launch this pilot program, we will be sending out a survey link to help receive feedback from our families. Your feedback is critical to helping us make improvements that will allow the Code Blue Busing Plan to be successful moving forward.

With additional days of freezing temperatures ahead, we are asking our families to ensure their student is dressed warmly while waiting at bus stops. If your family is in need of support related to winter apparel, we encourage you to reach out to the District—we are here to help.

It is important to note that Code Blue Busing will not be used in place of school closures when weather conditions are unsafe for school to be open. Closures will still occur when necessary to ensure the safety of students and staff.

The development of this pilot plan reflects our commitment to caring for one another and supporting our students as part of our One Akron philosophy. Thank you for your partnership, flexibility, and continued trust as we work together to keep our students safe.

With care and appreciation,

Andrea Kersten Taylor
