Sculptor Eric Jones Creates Memorial Sand Art at Akron 

Students in the Akron Central School District had the chance to meet and ask questions to sculptor Eric Jones as he created a memorial work from sand on the grounds of the school. 

Jones created a large Pikachu and a second memorial piece to honor Akron student Quinn Cratsenberg, who died in 2025. The two structures will reside on the side of the school building, with the memorial piece providing a blank space for students to draw and write memories. The June 17 creation of the sculpture came on what would have been Quinn’s 18th birthday. 

Jones, who creates work in mediums like sand, snow and pumpkins, has become a prominent fixture in the area and nationally with his works depicting Buffalo sports legends, patriotic scenes and pop culture figures. He has appeared on television shows on Food Network, and his works have been displayed in places like New York City’s Times Square. 

During an assembly, students were able to ask questions to Jones about his past works, his process and how he shares his work online. Members of Quinn’s family were in attendance, and a charity in Quinn’s honor, Quinn’s Kicks 4 Kidz, was highlighted during the day.
