AKRON, NEW YORK (October 7, 2019) – Toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, soap, and shampoo are examples of basic hygiene supplies most people take for granted they have stock in their cupboards.  But for many families, some who also struggle to put food on the table, toiletry items are desperately needed.  While other organizations are collecting for food drives, the Akron chapter of the National Honor Society has launched for the fourth year, “Operation Toothbrush” – a collection of toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant (for females and males), soap or body wash, shampoo and conditioner, for donation to needy families in the area.  The school-wide collection begins October 31st and will run through November 16, 2019.  ACS students can bring items to their homeroom or items donated by community members can be dropped off at the main elementary, middle or high school building offices.

“Over the past three years, the community and school has been very generous in this collection,” noted Mr. John Chubb, co-faculty advisor for Akron’s NHS with Mr. Matthew Baumgarten.  “The food pantry has mentioned that basic hygiene items are usually overlooked through donations.  “Operation Toothbrush” helps to provide these necessities to dozens of families in the area.  The National Honor Society is grateful for all the support received in this endeavor.”

Members of the National Honor Society will be facilitating the collection and tabulating items donated by each homeroom.      Donated items will be distributed to those in need within the school community as well as shared with the Akron-Newstead Food Pantry which helps local families who may be struggling throughout the year.

Questions about the collection may be directed to Mr. Matthew Baumgarten at (716)542-5030 x4115.
