FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE –
HOCHREITER SELECTED FOR CONFERENCE ALL-STATE VOCAL JAZZ ENSEMBLE
AKRON, NEW YORK (September 26, 2019) – Senior Evelyn Hochreiter of Akron High School has been selected to perform with the New York State School Music Association’s Conference All-State Vocal Jazz Ensemble. Over 6,500 sophomores and juniors from across the state auditioned last spring for a spot on one of several vocal or instrumental ensembles for which only 900 are selected. Following several days of concentrated rehearsals, Hochreiter will perform with the Vocal Jazz Ensemble at NYSSMA’s 84th Annual Winter Conference performance to be held at the Eastman Theater in Rochester, New York, December 7, 2019 at 1:00PM. The vocal jazz ensemble will be conducted by Rosana Eckert, a vocal jazz singer, composer, arranger and educator, including as Principal Lecturer of Jazz Voice at the University of North Texas.
Selection to Conference All-State is a complex process of auditions, adjudication, recommendations, proficiencies and rankings from the various zones across the state before the selection committees convene to undergo a monumental task of compiling a statewide master proficiency list for each instrument or voice part. All candidates perform Level VI solos from selected repertoire lists. Evelyn auditioned on the tune "That's All" by Alan Brandt and Bob Haymes and earned a perfect 100 as an Alto 1.
Hochreiter is the first vocalist from Akron Schools to be chosen for this prestigious vocal jazz ensemble. She is one of only a handful of students from ACS to be selected for any of the Conference All-State ensembles, including most recently, Kaitlyn Stachowiak ’15, who played bassoon for the Symphony, and Leah Bisson ’14 for the Women’s Chorus.
“Evelyn is a very uniquely gifted singer,” said Mrs. Meghen Pitts, Akron’s vocal director. “Her audition for Conference All-State was comprised of a stunning solo followed by vocal improvising and vocal jazz sight-reading – not easy at all! Evelyn's warm tone color lends itself beautifully to singing jazz and we are all very proud and look forward to her performance.”
Evelyn is well-remembered for her role as the lead character, Ariel, in the school’s production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid in 2018 and as the fed-up housewife, Alice Beineke, who crawled across the dining table singing the blues in 2019’s The Addams Family. She has sung numerous solos and duets and also plays French Horn in the school’s concert band and plays vibraphone, piano and is the vocalist for the jazz ensemble.
