SCHOOL CALENDAR REVISED FOR JUNETEENTH OBSERVANCE ON JUNE 18th
AKRON, NEW YORK (April 21, 2021) – The Akron Central School Board of Education has revised the current 2020-21 Student-Teacher calendar during their April 20, 2021 regular business meeting to add the observance of a state holiday on June 18, 2021.
The change reflects New York State legislation signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo in October of 2020 making Juneteenth a state holiday. Juneteenth celebrates the emancipation of those who had been enslaved in the United States. The word Juneteenth is a portmanteau of June and nineteenth. June 19th is recognized as the anniversary date of the June 19, 1865 announcement by the Union Army general proclaiming freedom from slavery in Texas.
Since the official holiday, June 19th, lands on a Saturday in 2020, Akron Schools will observe the holiday on Friday, June 18, 2021 and the school will be closed.
A copy of the revised calendar for 2020-21 as well as the calendar for the 2021-22 school year is available on the school website at www.akronschools.org/calendar.
