    First Grade!

    Dear Parents,

Welcome to Akron Elementary School!  First grade is an exciting time.  Your child will learn how to read, write stories, add, subtract, and so much more.  It is extremely important to build on small successes.  Each child will progress at his/her own rate and therefore acquire skills as he/she is ready.  Here are some ways you can help build your child's self-esteem:

    ·         Look at the work your child brings home, together.

    ·         Read to and with your child everyday.

    ·         Celebrate your child's success, no matter how small it may seem.  This will help keep your child enthusiastic about learning and show that you are proud of their work!

    Other tidbits about first grade...

The specials schedule will run on a six-day cycle.  Each day will be assigned a letter, form A to F.  In the event that school is unexpectedly closed for the day, the letter of that day is skipped.  When school is closed due to a holiday or a preplanned event, the letter day is carried over.  The cycle will be placed on each month's  calendar.

Library books are due the following library day.  Sneakers are required for gym class as well as for when the class goes outside to use the playground.  This requirement is due to safety reasons.  Remember to send in an art smock for your child to use during art class so that clothing stays clean.  Students should also have a sweatshirt or jacket for when we use the playground on cool days.

Please notify the elementary health office in the event your child will be absent from school.  This will help out a great deal with keeping track of absences and reasons.  It is also very important to send an excuse in with your child once he/she returns to school after an absence.

    Sincerely,

    Mrs. Mathews & Mrs. Heiderman
