FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE –
AKRON GOLF WINS NIAGARA-ORLEANS TITLE – 1st TIME IN 30 YEARS
AKRON, NEW YORK (October 20, 2020) – The Akron High School golf team won the Niagara-Orleans All-League Tournament held Saturday, October 17, 2020 at the Willowbrook Golf Course in Lockport. The tournament win earned the team an additional six points to ensure the team would maintain their top spot in the Niagara-Orleans League having entered the tournament with Newfane trailing by only one point. This is the first league title for the Tigers in 30 years.
Sophomore co-captain Andrew Romesser leads the team. Drew’s 42 average was the best of the Tigers and good enough to finish third overall in the league. Drew shot a team best 89 at the All-League tournament.
“There are several reason for our success this season,” shared Coach Bryan Bellis about his team that ended their season with an 11-1 record. “First, this is a young group of athletes that have been with me since they were in seventh grade. They gained some valuable experience at a young age that has benefited our team this season. Although we experienced some growing pains early on, the players used those lessons and experiences to better themselves, and we can all see that the hard work and dedication has paid off.”
In addition to Romesser, players who contributed to the All-League win include Jack Klodzinski, River White, Kelvin Jonathan, Trace Hill and Kyle Swift. However, faced with some adversity during the season, Coach Bellis credits many other team members who contributed to the Tigers’ success throughout the season. As only six players compete for each team during a league match, players practicing regularly and filling in for matches included Sly Sundown, Aiden Wild and Aiden Romesser, an eighth grader who proved to be an important asset down the stretch. Sloan Jonathan, Isaac Cerasani, Steven Doktor, Lucas Lowe, and Charlie Martina rounded out the team.
Drew Romesser and Jack Klodzinski’s season averages place them third and sixth respectively in the N-O League’s Top 7 to earn them spots to compete individually in the Section VI Championship to be held Spring 2021. However, the Akron team, as League Champs, will also participate in the section competition representing the N-O League.
“The partnership between Dande Farms and the school has been an important part of the team's growth, too,” said Coach Bellis, who has coached the Tigers for eight years. “In the last couple of years, the course has allowed the kids to practice starting August 1 with no charge to the athlete and has put a driving range in for the kids to use to improve their skills before and during the season. These extra rounds and practice have been critical to our success and we are grateful. I’m very excited to see what the future holds for this young golf team.”
Father and son, Jon and Michael Cohen, currently own Dande Farms.
Former ACS science teacher, Mr. Richard Zelawski, is credited with starting the program at ACS back in 1977 and was coach of the team in 1990 when they won the league championship. Zelawski worked with former superintendent, the late Dr. David W. Fish, and the late Mr. Ben DeYoung, owner of Dande Farms at the time, to develop the partnership with the golf course and get the team started.
