SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICERS
A School Resource Officer (SRO) is a law enforcement officer who is assigned to either an elementary, middle, or high school. The main goal of the SRO is to prevent problems with juveniles by promoting positive relations between youth and law enforcement. The SRO position here at the Akron Schools encompasses two major components which allow the SRO to achieve this goal: law enforcement and education. These two components allow the SRO to take a proactive approach to law enforcement in the school. SRO's are not just "cops" on campus. SRO's provide all law enforcement duties in their schools. They educate the students by teaching law related classes and other related subjects in the classroom and also talk to both students and parents on various topics. The SRO becomes involved in the students lives as a positive role model. The intent is that the positive experiences students have with the SRO will bridge the gap between students and law enforcement. This will not only be a positive in school, but also outside of school in real life. The SRO also gives a sense of security to not only the students, but also the teachers in the school community. The SRO will also establish and maintain a close partnership with school administrators in order to provide for a safe school environment. They assist schools officials with their efforts to enforce Board of Education policies and procedures, and ensure school administrator safety by being present during school searches, which may involve weapons and controlled substances. The SRO will also be visible within the school community, attend school functions and build a working relationship with school staff as well as with student and parent groups. The SRO program is a proactive approach to deal with the pressures today's youth face. This includes the use of alcohol, drugs, tobacco, and e-cigarettes, along with peer pressure, gang activity, internet safety, and also sex crimes."BULLYING IN OUR SCHOOLS WILL NOT BE TOLERATED !" These situations are not only in our schools, but in our community as well.
